OUR FAVOURITE THINGS ABOUT MONTEZUMA
Montezuma is extremely laid back. Let yourself slow down to the town's lazy pace and feel yourself unwind from the pressures of everyday life back home. If you want an array of crazy bars and clubs, we suggest the neighbouring towns of Santa Theresa and Malpais - Montezuma is lower key. At night, the main attraction is Chico's bar, and everyone tends to mingle in the street outside - buy a drink from the supermarket, find a space to sit down and watch the world go by!
... as seen from outside our houses or the rock on Montezuma beach. You really have never seen so many stars at once. It's sumptuous.
Perhaps thanks to the ecclectic mix of expats from all over the world starting businesses, this tiny town has by our count no fewer than 10 great restaurants, which is not to say expensive. And for the most part the food is also extremely healthy. Seafood, traditional Costa Rican dishes, sophisticated Italian dishes, delicious desserts, barbeque... wonderful!
In our garden alone, we see dozens of types of birds (hence our name - Colibrí means hummingbird in Spanish); deer; iguanas; mapaches; butterflies, bats; lizards, frogs; and... sometimes snakes and scorpions (mostly harmless!). The nearby national park of Cabo Blanco is home to many more species, and monkeys are never far away. Just don't leave your snack lying around unsupervised.
The Montezuma waterfall has 3 tiers. The first can easily be reached on foot, and is a great place for a dip. The third can be accessed by a more challenging climb, or by road and then a short walk. This is the really magical bit... the falls open into a sort of natural swimming pool, with varying heights of jumps depending on bravery, and there is a swing rope attached to an overhanging branch.
Beautiful, wild looking, soft sand beaches. Dramatic views from all around. And you can surf at nearby Playa Grande or Playa Los Cedros.
If swimming in the Cascadas, relaxing on the beach, hanging out in the town, and eating delicious food aren't enough to keep you busy, there are plenty of other activities. Surfing, kayaking, fishing, hiking, horeseriding, snorkelling, boat trips and diving are all easily arranged,
